At the new rail bridge

Plaque on bridge: This plaque commemorates the opening of this bridge on 16th December 1999 by Jean Venables MBE, Chairman of the Thames Regional Flood Defence Committee A new channel of the river thames flows beneath the bridge, created by the Environment Agency to relieve flooding in the areas of Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton. The bridge was built and installed on behalf of the Environment Agency by Edmund Nuttall Ltd, under the supervision of Railtrack. The 8,000 tonne structure was built alongside the rail embankment and jacked into position continuously over a five week period, beginning in July 1999. The embankment was frozen prior to the work to secure it during the operation and trains continued to run overhead throughout. This is the first rail bridge to be installed using this technique. The arches have been designed to complement Brunel's original bridge over the River Thames at Maidenhead, built in 1839.
